Leif & Sunnie Accordion Duo

Leif Holmes and Sunnie Sundquist, LEIF & SUNNIE ACCORDION DUO, celebrate their Nordic roots with spirited and soulful renditions of traditional, historical Nordic folk songs brought to the Pacific Northwest by immigrant ancestors and played at grange hall dances, picnics and community gatherings in the late 1800s and early 20th century.

LEIF & SUNNIE ACCORDION DUO were invited to perform at 50th Kaustinen Folk Music Festival 2017 in Finland and entertained passengers on the Hurtigruten coastal sailing from Kirkenes to Bergen. The highlight in Norway: Playing the beautiful song Nidelven written by Oskar Hoddø in 1940 on Den Gamle Bybro, the Old Town bridge over the Nid River in Trondheim. Norwegian American News titled their article “A Musical Journey: Leif & Sunnie bring a favorite song home.”

We present a musical menu relevant to Nordic culture featured at Norsk Høstfest: Hälsa dem därhemma, Kristiania vals, Dansen på Måkeskjaer, Johan på Snippen schottis, Emma valssi, to mention a few. Petosa Italian-made concert-tuned and musette-tuned accordions complement our selections. Our CD “Nordic Folk Music” at Ingebretsens.com

Leif and Sunnie met in 1950 while playing in Hugo Helmer’s Marching Accordion Band – over 50 accordions on parade throughout the Northwest and British Columbia, the only marching accordion band in the USA. Helmer, Swedish immigrant, introduced hundreds of children to the accordion in the mid-20th century.

Leif Holmes and Sunnie Sundquist, born to immigrant parents/ grandparents and raised in the embrace of Scandinavian/ American communities north of Seattle, carry on cultural traditions and celebrate our Nordic heritage by way of lifestyle, cuisine and devotion: Leif, ten years as Hugo’s Accordion Band director; recognized 40-year member and Board Trustee, Sons of Norway Fritjov lodge. Sunnie, Board Trustee, Nordic Museum, author of narrative nonfiction book The Legacy of Ida Lillbroända: Finnish emigrant to America 1893.

We are honored to be invited to play at Norsk Høstfest 2018 and excited to be part of Pure Scandimonium!
