Joseph Enright

Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame
1995 Inductee

Enright, a native of Minot, made military history when he sank Japan’s largest ship during World War II. Enright received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and took over the command of the submarine Archer-Fish after graduation. During his career he was division commander and squadron commander of submarines. Enright and his crew sank Japan’s largest aircraft carrier and the largest ship in the world, the Shinano. The ship had been only 17 hours into its top-secret maiden voyage. After 35 years in the Navy, Enright retired with the rank of captain.
