Dalakopa is a Norwegian “gammeldans”/folk music band. There are nine musicians in the group: three fiddles, two accordions, bass, guitar, and wooden flute/recorder. Dalakopa includes several “veterans”, although younger faces are also to be seen among the musicians, all of which equally love sharing music with others!
Dalakopa’s music has appeal for dancers accustomed to lively, old-time tunes as well as folks who enjoy listening to and watching energetic, sometimes soulful performances and personalities. The group has achieved unique status among fans of traditional dance music in Scandinavia.
Dalakopa has been famous in Norway since 1985, when the group won first prize at Titano Festivalen that year. In addition to trophies and a lot of flowers, the group won a contract with Heilo records. The recording that ensued (1986) was nominated for a Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy) and won, in competition with recordings by other solid, tradition-based music groups. This was followed by a substantial winning streak at old-time dance contests in the 1980s and 1990s.
Dalakopa has played at festivals in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark and recorded twelve albums. In 2018, the group was included in the Norwegian Gammeldans Hall of Fame.
Dalakopa is known for their traditional tunes and compositions, their unique group sound, and their creative approach to playing together. The ensemble is now considered somewhat of an “icon” in this genre!
Dalakopa’s performance is being supported in part through the American-Scandinavian Foundation and Folklore Village.
