Harold Schafer
Humanitarian Award
1995 Awardee
A life-long North Dakotan, “work” has been this man’s motto and the state has well benefited from his efforts.
He founded the state’s largest home-owned business, the Gold Seal Company, and his development of Medora has turned this western community into one of the state’s major tourist attractions.
Schafer’s philanthropy is evident in his work with the state’s Boy and Girl Scout programs, along with state 4-H clubs and area YMCA programs. The growth of Bismarck State College is attributed to Schafer’s work in the development of its properties and the Medora facilities developed by Schafer have been donated to the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.
He was the youngest man to receive the Horatio Alger Award from American Colleges. He is a recipient of this state’s highest honor, the North Dakota Rough Rider Award and he is a member of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.
